Muppet Puppet Plays was one of the additional three 30-minute special produced for public television in 1969, as follow-ups to the previous 1968 documentary "The Muppets on Puppets."
The program is hosted by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, with assistance from Jerry Juhl, who teach the viewer how to operate puppets, perform characters, and put on puppet shows. Henson and Oz usually used the puppets they built on-screen for the "The Muppets Make Puppets" episode, but primary Muppet characters also appear in the special, including Kermit the Frog (whom Henson refers to as a "frog-type Muppet"), Harry the Hipster, Yorick, the Snerfs, Gleep (an early version of Grover) and Little Girl Sue. A performance of "Java" is also included in the episode.
While the 14-minute first half of the first special "The Muppets Make Puppets" was uploaded to YouTube by IowaPublicTelevision's official YouTube channel, the full episode of "Muppet Puppet Plays" hasn't turned up online but it still exists in the archives and is also available in the trading circuit. However, these specials have not been released to DVD, or specifically as bonus features on any of The Muppet Show DVD releases, while "The Muppets on Puppets" was included as a bonus feature on The Muppet Show Season 3 DVD box set which was released in May of 2008.
