"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was a 2011 film directed by David Fincher, which was based on the Millennium series novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson. Before production of the film wrapped, David Fincher announced that the two following installments "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" would also be made, They would be based on the second and third novels in the Millennium series respectively.

According to David Fincher, the two films would be filmed back-to-back. "The Girl Who Played with Fire" was planned to be released in 2013, but was delayed due to rewrites to the script of the film. David Fincher has been working on other projects and Rooney Mara who played the role of Lisbeth Salander in the 2011 film said that she doubts the two films would ever be made.
