Talking Tom Cat is an interactive mobile game created by Outfit7, first released for iOS devices on June 26, 2010. It was the company’s debut title and marked the beginning of the Talking Tom & Friends franchise, introducing players to its central character, Tom. The project was started by Slovenian entrepreneur Samo Login and a small group of collaborators who were exploring ways to break into the mobile app market. A follow-up, Talking Tom Cat 2, launched in 2011.
Before the familiar high-quality version of Tom seen in the games, the character originated from a simpler 3D model made by Andrey Kravchenko. This model, titled CAT CARTOON.zip, was uploaded to TurboSquid on January 31, 2004, where it was originally sold for around $90 USD. The listing was later taken down around late 2010, early 2011, possibly due to the growing attention surrounding the Talking Tom character and its connection to the franchise.
Model recovery[]
On May 19, 2025, Addy Gamer, who bought the CAT CARTOON.zip model back in 2006, uploaded Session 5 of his search for the lost file. In this video, he successfully located the 3ds Max (.max) file containing the model and its original textures. However, the recovered version lacked any bone rigging or animation data.
A week later, on May 26, 2025, Addy shared a community post announcing a new Discord server where he planned to release the recovered files, In his post, he wrote:
“Hello everyone,
Here is a link to my Discord I set up. Kindly join and I’ll drop the link to download the 3D Max file there. Thanks.”
He later uploaded a file titled “Cat model without bones.max” file to the server, This discovery represented a partial recovery of the original 2004 CAT CARTOON.zip model, as the rigging and morph targets were still missing from this version
You can download the original 3D model here
The full 2004 CAT CARTOON model with the rig and Morph targets (Also known as face controls) was later on found by Erik beyer on august 28 2025.
Model differences[]
The CAT CARTOON.zip model was originally uploaded to TurboSquid on January 31st, 2004 by Andrey Kravchenko. The creator later updated and fully re-mapped the model on February 3rd, 2008, as confirmed by the archived TurboSquid page description, (the 2008 version was re-textured with new UVs).
The 2008 model version is the one used in the first Talking Tom Cat app, Both Erik Beyer and Addy Gamer Had the 2004 version, making the 2008 model currently lost, The differences between the two versions are most noticeable in the nose and ears, the 2008 version features a noticeably pinker nose and more fur on the ears.
