In December 2012, Jeff Kinney was featured at a premire event in the UK. He confirmed that the third live-action film was going to be the last one in the series, but he also announced an animated film based on ''Cabin Fever''. During production, it was stated if the animated film was going to be marketed as a theatrical film or a television special and Jeff Kinney would much rather stick with a television special. Jeff Kinney also stated that there was no longer going to be live-action based on the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (until the fourth sequel in 2017) and he wanted it to be released as a animated television special on FOX in 2014.

However, around early 2019, an animated television series based on the books was announced by Fox. It is possible that the elements of the books, specifically elements of ''Cabin Fever'', may make it into the series, which might appear on Disney's upcoming streaming service (due to the acquisition of 20th Century Fox). The television special is probably the closest to the cancelled special.
