Doraemon is a succesful Japanese media franchise created by manga duo Fujiko Fujio. Despite its popularity, it is also known for its abundance of lost media, especially its first anime adaptation that dates back to 1973.

In the Iberian peninsula, the anime premiered in the '90s with a dub done by Sonygraf in Barcelona, who also dubbed it into Catalan. However, in 2001, Mar Digital, based in Biscay, decided to redub the series. Said redub also redubbed most of the Sonygraf-dubbed episodes, but despite this, the redub became even more popular, resulting in the original dub falling into obscurity. The redubbed is often said due to Mar Digital dubbing Crayon Shin-chan, another TV Asahi series, and Biscay is a less populated area, causing the dub to move to there as a cost-cutting measure. The dubbing was later continued by DOMusic TV in 2003 after the Mar Digital fire.

Nowadays, information on this dub is very scarce, mainly due to its recent obscurity. The only material that survive are clips or episodes recorded from VHS tapes.

Casting[1][]

  • Doraemon: Ana Orra
  • Nobita: Assumpta Navascués
  • Shizuka: Laura del Bas
  • Gian: Nacho de Porrata
  • Suneo: Noemí Bayarri
  • Tamako Nobi: Mayte Supervía
  • Nobisuke Nobi: Javier Amiliblia
  • Dorami: Julia Chalmeta

History[]

Before the dub[]

In 1954, Sonygraf was founed in Barcelona back when Spain was still under Francoist rule.[2] During the dictarship, the country is strictly Hispanophone with region-specific languages being banned, including Catalan, Barcelona's main language.

On April 2, 1979, a second anime based on Doraemon premiered on TV Asahi in Japan. The anime became a hit in its native Japan. Its first European dub was in 1982, when the first Italian dub was made.

The dub's creation[]

In 1993, Barcelonese dubbing studio Luk Internacional requested licensing the Doraemon anime that aired in Japan back then. For the dubbing studio, Sonygraf was chosen, who began dubbing it in Spanish starting December 23, 1993, and was also used as a base for their Catalan dub, which premiered on February 7, 1994.

385 episodios were dubbed, with some skipped, resulting in an inconsistent broadcast order.[1]

Differences[]

Reused for the redub[]

  • Doraemon is pronounced as "DoRA-ee-mon", rather than "DoRA-eh-emon",
  • Nobita has an accent in the I, rather than the O.
  • Shizuka has an accent in the U, rather than the I.
  • The intro and ending use different instrumentals.

Exclusive to this dub[]

  • The word "ecchi" is either changed to "porro" or "cochino".
  • Gian's name is pronounced as "Yee-an", rather than "Jye-an". He was renamed to "Gigante" in the redub.
  • Dekisugi has an accent in the U, rather than the I. He was renamed to "Dekigusu" in the redub.

Canal Panda's Portuguese sub[]

  • Gian is renamed to Gigante. This name was also used in the redub.
  • Some characters' names were renamed, most likely due to mishearing:
    • "Takeshi", Gian's real name, was written as "Takeishi".
    • Dekisugi was written as "Dekisougi".
    • Muku was written as "Mako".

Broadcasting[]

Spain and Andorra[]

On December 23, 1993, the dub premiered on Telemadrid, a local Madrilenian TV station.[1]

The series later expanded to all of Spain and Andorra through TV cable when it was broadcast on Minimax. The cable provider that carries Minimax is also available in Latin America. In 1998, the channel was replaced by Fox Kids's Spanish feed. On January 13, 1994, it aired on free-to-air Andalusian television via Canal Sur,[1] and in 1998, was later rerun on Canal 2 Andalucía.

In 1997, reruns aired on Club Super 3 through Vía Digital, as well as on Canal Panda.

On September 13, 1999, the series reached free-to-air television in all of Spain and Andorra on La 2,[1] who aired it through its TPH Club program. Said program was also aired through La Primera on weekends.

Portugal, Angola and Mozambique[]

On 1997, Panda Club was renamed to Canal Panda. One of the rebranding's first programs was Doraemon, airing with this dub's audio and with Portuguese subtitles. The channel is also available in Angola y Mozambique. This marks the first time the series reached Portugal and Africa.

Curiously, in 2009, 8 years after the redub, this dub was also aired alongside the redub on Panda Biggs, again subtitled.

Macau[]

Canal Panda used to be available in Macau during its first years, but was later taken off the air after the country became a Chinese territory, although Portuguese is still kept as an official language alongside Cantonse

Redubbing and rarity[]

In 2001, Mar Digital, based in Biscay, decided to redub the series.[3] The exact date is unknown, but according to calculation, it most likely happened in May 2001. At least 1,400 episodios were dubbed during the redubbed's airtime. Despite this, the intro and ending from the original dub were still kept in, which is notable with the "¡Esto es el gorrocóptero!" line, which is voiced by Ana Orra, where in the redub, Estíbaliz Lizárraga voices Doraemon.

Due to the redub's popularity, the original dub fell into obscurity. The original dub became popular in Portugal thanks to it airing on the popular children's channel Canal Panda.

Availability[]

Today, episodes are found on VHS tapes that were uploaded to various websites over the years, with a very popular example being Doraemon VHS 12, which brings 18 full episodes, 3 partially lost, and one that is only found in a split-second shot. These episodes were recorded between 2000 and 2001 on Canal Panda. A few episodes can also be found on Portuguese Facebook pages, such as Eva PT and Passado Das VHS (Past of the VHSs).

The aforementioned Doraemon VHS 12 and Antiguo doblaje de D0R4EMON were also available on YouTube, but were blocked in some countries by TV Asahi, which ironically includes Spain and Portugal. Unusually, the blocking also affected the lowly-populated Chile, which is also where LucianoTheWindowsFan lives in, who re-uploaded the Doraemon VHS 12 video to the Internet Archive by downloading it using an Icelandic VPN. Similarly, the Antiguo doblaje de D0R4EMON video was downloaded using a Belgian VPN and then re-uploaded to the same website. The former can no longer be found in search results, VPN enabled or not, due to it being deleted from YouTube in late 2022 alongside the channel that uploaded it (David Sucesso). The description states it is the 12th of the 14 tapes (hence the number in the title), which could mean there are more recordings that end up becoming "re-lost media".

On March 7, 2015, a video was uploaded to Dailymotion called Doraemon en TVE 2 - Doblaje antiguo. Luciano reuploaded the video to VidLii, which can be found here. On November 27, 2022, Luciano uploaded all the episodes he was able to rescue (some being restored with the original visuals) to the Internet Archive, which could be watched here.
