In 2008, Fireman Sam officially switched from stop-motion animation to full CGI with the show being animated by Xing Xing Digital Corporation. Before this, however, a test animation was created in 2007 by Xing Xing as a test to see what Fireman Sam would look like in CGI, the pilot reuses audio from various episodes from Series 5 and recreates the episodes in CGI.

Findings[]

On 11 December 2008, YouTube user deviousdeseasel (whose channel is no longer on YouTube) uploaded a video of the CGI test. By the 26 October 2010, the video had reached 1,366,101 views. While the video is no longer on YouTube, it can still be watched through the Wayback Machine, as it was archived on 26 October 2010, and can be viewed here. It was also archived on 29 December 2011, when it had 5,248,421 views, and can be viewed here. Some footage from this pilot was found on YouKu, a Chinese alternative to YouTube. While the video appears to have been removed, the video was recorded with a the Apple screen-recorder on an iPad and was uploaded to YouTube, it can be viewed here.

Though the recorded version contains all contents of the YouKu upload, it seems that some footage is missing from the pilot in the upload, as unlike the first clip, the second clip shown in the video does not end with Norman saying " I've got a head for heights! I saved Woolly way up high on Pontypandy Mountain. Remember?" with the sound fading out and fading to black with Fireman Sam logo forming again with the Xing Xing Digital still logo showing up , but instead just ends right as Norman looks down from the fire engine. The archive version features the second clip being finished but the first clip is unfinished. It's possible that there were more animation test made but this is unconfirmed

Trivia[]

  • In the unreleased pilot, Jupiter resembles an American fire engine far more than the rest of the show.
