After the success of Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie, Phil Vischer (The voice of Bob the Tomato, Archibald Asparagus. Mr. Lunt, Pa Grape, Jimmy Gourd, etc.) wrote this. However, it turned out that they didn't have the budget to get it made because Big Idea went bankrupt in mid-2003 and was relocated in Tennessee, now owned by Classic Media (now DreamWorks Classics). Because this was not cancelled, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: a VeggieTales Movie was written, but the movie itself did not come out, however, until July 2007.
The movie's plot was said to be about how Bob and Larry met and got their own show, and it would have should humans which is another reason the film never came to be because they were too complicated. Also on the Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie bonus features (especially the studio tour feature) you can see some concept art and even the full color script which is the closest thing currently of anything finished of the movie.
Before the release date of Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, Big Idea Productions had an idea how to make another VeggieTales-based feature film called The Bob and Larry Movie, it was set to be release on 2005, however, it was canceled, and replaced by The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie. So, they decided to set it to be release on 2008, instead.
